Dating back to the 15th century, the Château de
la Roche towers above the right bank of the River Loire, 4 km from
Amboise: the royal town that was home to François I and Leonardo da
Vinci. Built by Geoffroy de Marray in around 1470, it is a beautiful
example of Renaissance architecture. Formerly a surveillance outpost
protecting a ford over the Loire, it later played host to a great
number of famous guests from the worlds of politics and the Arts,
including the Duke of Choiseul, the Princess of Ursins, the Daudet
family, Anatole France, Marcel Proust and Paul Cézanne. Today, it is
the site of a beautiful 37-hectare vineyard, arranged in three main
parcels: le Breuil, les Dessus de la Roche and Artigny, all
bordering the Loire in a narrow strip of land three kilometres long.
The exceptional flint clay soils are responsible for giving the
Sauvignons their distinctive smoky taste. The vineyard is cultivated
according to the principles of sustainable agriculture. Anne
Chainier has made it one of the most renowned Sauvignon Blanc
estates from the Loire.
