Three generations of
Gilberts are committed to making the winery a success through shared
vision, personal investment, and a passion for producing great wine
from our family's vineyards. Our great-great grandfather H.M.
Gilbert in 1908 said, “Let us follow the invitation of our great
mountains which lift our eyes and inspire us to better things.” With
that quote in mind we have developed Gilbert Cellars; where
tradition meets innovation, where home meets exploration, where our
past meets our future, where our mountains meet our valley. In the
wine that is created under these contrasting and fascinating
circumstances are the spirited & genuine moments shared with the
family and friends that you love. Gilbert Cellars is perched above
the Ahtanum Valley at the foothills of the Cascade Mountains west of
Yakima and sits on property that has been in the Gilbert family for
5 generations. Originally owned by the Hackett family and used as a
cattle ranch, the farm was planted to apples, pears, cherries, and
peaches in the 1920s and 1930s by the Richey & Gilbert fruit
company. The property remained entirely in tree fruit until 2003,
when the first wine grapes and lavender were planted on the East 40
on a block known as Bocz's Hillside. In 2005-2006 the steel-frame
orchard shop was renovated to house the winery, and in 2008 a cave
was dug into the side of the hill in front of the winery for barrel
storage, which allows producing and storing around 5000 cases of
each vintage on site.
