Clos des Fées
Côtes du Roussillon | France
Clos des Fées, which the eloquent and passionate
Hervé Bizeul founded in 1998, covers more than 50 acres in the wild,
almost savage countryside near the small village of Vingrau in Aigly
Valley. Bizeul has been on a quest to revitalize and protect the
heirloom vineyards of the region (with individual vines up to 100
years old), too many of which have already been abandoned and
uprooted given the chronic economic crisis facing the local wine
industry. He has laboriously brought back to life as many old
vineyard sites as he can, some of which are cultivated by
horse-drawn plough given the rugged terrain. His new planting
densities approach 5,000 vines per acre, much as in the finer crus
of Burgundy.
