Built in the 1600’s, the winery of Castello
Carboncine is located in the Veneto region of Northeast Italy,
outside of the town of Treviso. It is managed by sisters Susanna and
Isabella Bellio and lies on the Sile River which up until the 1960’s
was used to transport goods to Venice. The 45 hectares of vineyards
are in the areas of Carboncine and Beato Erico and consist of
mineral-rich limestone soil that originated in the pleistocenic era.
The nearby sea adds some sand veins, providing a soil structure that
enriches intensity and adds character to the wine. The quality of
Castello Carboncine’s wines is attributed to the careful combination
of tradition with modern technology of wine making. Their
proprietary system of “basculant stainless steel tanks” invented by
Suzanna’s and Isabella’s father, and the use of oak casks actually
constructed in the winery’s cellar by local craftsmen, are key. In
addition to making wine, mozzarella and other cheeses are made from
the milk of water buffalo raised on the property.
