Bertrand-Delespierre
Chamery,
Champagne | France
Didier Bertrand is tied to his land and fanatical
about quality producing Grower Champagnes that are broad and earthy.
Terroir influences varietal choice here, which in turn influences
style. The 1er Cru village of Chamery is on the Montagne de Reims.
But where the famous Grand Cru villages of the Montagne (Bouzy,
Verzenay, Mailly) are southeast of the city, Chamery is southwest,
in a zone known for high quality Pinot Meunier. 20 years ago the
Bertrand vineyards totaled 15 acres, 60% Meunier, 20% each Pinot
Noir & Chardonnay. Today there are 25 acres divided 40/30/30. The
Meunier averages almost 40 years of age, the Chardonnay and Pinot
Noir both over 20.
